In my never ending search of more power, speed, and new ways to not save money I came across something that I did not anticipate. I began my search for E92 M3's and gen 5 Camaro ZL1's. Both have depreciated into the $30-40k range but decided that the Camaro’s interior is unbearable (I sell new Chevy’s and the gen 6 is a million times better) and in the case of the E92 that I would rather spend the extra $20-30k on my E46.

That brings us to this evening when on my drive home I thought early R35 GT-R’s must have depreciated to similar levels...Well I was fucking WRONG. Most are $60k range for a 6-9 year old car with 30-70k miles, that is just bananas. I was convinced they would be hanging in the $35-45k range. I’m getting back on the R32 GT-R train now.

Keep your E46. Hard to beat for the money. E92 is a better commuter, but the E46 has better driving dynamics. I honestly can’t think of anything to get next under 100k except for a Cayman. Which is more of a pain to do maintenance on without a lift.

R35s munch transmissions all the time iirc. So maybe a bullet dodged?

Nissan keeps upping the price of new gtr’s every year more than inflation thus keepi g the used market buoyant.

If you were to sell the E46, how much would you sell it for?

Also, have you looked at a 335is? Not quite an M3 but really cheap to run compared to one, and extremely easy to mod.

Other suggestions for $30-40k: RS5, C63, new STI, 996 Turbo (would be what I would go for)

I like the Cayman. I’ve wanted one since a friend of mine let me drive hers. I could have bought out her lease for crazy small money but I didn’t have anywhere to PARK the thing at the time.

Now that I HAVE a lift...

It’s not something I am contemplating very seriously but I figure with my mileage I could get $10-13k. I don’t like 335's much and apart from the 996 turbo the rest of that list is rather blah to me.

Really think if I do get something else it will be an R32 or R33 GT-R.

Yeah the E46 really ticks every box for me don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it. My goal is to slightly improve it and keep it on the road until I can’t drive anymore.

I know that’s why I thought they’d be cheap. Wouldn’t mind the risk for a little while though...gotta keep on my toes!

Precisely why I will not dabble in that. I really can’t stand the whole brown diesel Miata wagon schtick everyone perpetuates around here.

For the first year or two. I imagine most of it is that the car is virtually the same up to 2011 when the last big refresh was and the early cars could get the software updates. Styling hasn’t changed in 9 years either.

I love the update for 2017 it looks spectacular but I don’t have that kind of money.

It’s a 6MT, right? I would seriously consider purchasing it if you decide to sell it down the road. I want a nicely maintained E46 driver, but the market around me isn’t great.

I live about an hour and a half away from Japanese classics, so you could sell it to me and I’d even give you a ride down to buy a GTR from them haha.

Mine is a 6MT and I have had the beisan systems VANOS oil pump disk installed and the rear subframe reinforced with Turner plates, powerflex black subframe mounts, and rtabs. The car drives great now and should be awesome once I buy Pilot Super Sports for the E92 M3 wheels I picked up back in February.

Black interior, right?

I’ve got a set of E92 M3 18's sitting in my basement, I need to get tires ASAP.

I’d consider it if I had space and money for a second car

I need a RWD car in my life and I love compacts.

We bought it for out Cheap Car Challenge, and it hasn’t moved much since. Finally got it running pretty good, its in decent shape for a 1500 turbo, 5 speed RWD car. Quick.
